According to the official histories by Ban Gu, Jin Shang was the favourite of Emperor Zhao (86-74 BCE): 'During the time of Emperor Zhao, Duke Jin Shang, who held the position of Manager of Horses for the Imperial Attendant Carriages, inherited the noble title of Duke from his father Ridan, General of the War Chariots.'
