The Norseman
(Between Hills and Mountains)

Between hills and mountains by the sea the Norseman has found his home, where he has dug up the sites and put up his houses on them. He looked at the stony coasts where noone had built before: 'Let us start building our hamlets, so that we will own the shore.' He looked at the sea out there; it was hard to sail the rough seas, but the fish swam in the waters, and that fish he wanted to see. Often, in the cold winter he thought: 'I should have gone south before!' But when the spring sun was bright, he loved again his domestic shore. When the hills were green as gardens, and the nights were bright as days, and the flowers were blooming on straws, it was the most beautiful of places.

The Waves

The waves are beautiful. The wild waves burst in anger on the ships, broken up in wild, noisy foams, and fall back, drawing their breaths with rage, with desperation and destruction. How beautiful!

The Battle of Solskjel

Såleis det høva skulle, at skjold-beraren førde nordatil hær-skip og heldt til hoggstrid med to kongar. Hovdingar tre hugheilt helsa då kvarandre utan ord, men med skjoldljom og oddgny drygt lenge. Gramen vekte eit spjutver, med gny av ljomande sverdslag. Pilene regnde frå lufta, og raudt or såra saud blodet. Haugar av stridsmenn lagdest livlause framme i rausna, men kongen hugdjerv vann siger, med hogga skrall mot skjoldar.

Hærskips-føraren, han som hoggstriden vann på stranda, inn i bygda ved sjøen sende drenger mange. Føreåt alt folket flytt hade landet for honom som med hærskjold hadde Skottland herja.
