Please be at home in my humble hut. I am Gartan, chief of the Cruithni in Alba. I was elevated to that position by the untimely demise of our former leader, Bridei.
Our clan is small owing to a mad druid priest, some strange religious beliefs and a voracious wurm. All those are gone now, and our tribe is on the increase. We mine the yellow stone, as taught to us by the wizard, Nevvyn. We trade it to the brown people who come in their boats with red sails.
Before, we were poor and hungry. Now we have many cattle and sheep, and much of the good things in life. In spite of our apparent riches, we still lead a fairly simple life... eat, sleep, sing and dance, and work only when it is necessary.
Oh! You are asking about my blue skin? Well, 'tis not truly blue. These marks are decorations made with woad, a blue dye, which is pricked into the skin with a sharp point. We also sometimes use ocher, for a change in color, as you can see by the lynx-head upon my thigh. Only the warriors, both men and women, are allowed such decoration, although the other women sometimes paint their hands and faces with fanciful patterns. It is a thing of beauty in our eyes.
Well, I must go to meet with our warriors. We are planning a raid on a neighboring clan. We have two lads who have just come of age, and are in need of wives. It is likely that they would come to us gladly, but it is in our traditions to acquire them through raids. In truth, we will "accidentally" leave some cattle and sheep behind, for the bride price.
