Once upon a time there was a young woman of the Tuatha Dé Danann who raised Manannán's horses on Eilean Arainn.
Muirin Beag was her name, and she took a great deal of pride in being the sea-god's Baneachlach. The more prominent members of the Daoine Sidhe race enjoyed palatial raths below the hills. Others took servile roles within their cousins' palaces or as solitary faeries in the countryside.
Muirin Beag was fortunate that Manannán mac Lir took a liking to her and gave her such a high-esteemed situation at Gleann Bhreac, just east of Emain Abhlach. It is here that she met her dearest horse-friend, Cuaifeach, the Lord of the Wind.
Cuaifeach has not yet sired any colts; there is still the task of finding a suitable mate for him. There are one or two mares worthy of him, but they run wild, beyond this gleann. Scots pirates also run wild across the island, so the Baneachlach is always armed and ready to defend her master's sidhe-harras.
Though Muirin's pastures are great, they are tucked away between Ard Bheinn and Beinn Bhreac, a passage seldom travelled by the island's other inhabitants.
