~~ In ancient Rome, when you had a message for the public, you scratched it on a wall.

Graffiti inscriptions have been found on the walls of ancient ruins, namely the Roman catacombs and Pompeii. It was not only the Greeks and Romans that produced graffiti, the Mayan site of Tikal also has ancient graffiti. Viking graffiti also survives in Rome and at Newgrange Mound in Ireland, and a Varangian scratched his name (Halvdan) in runes on a banister in the Hagia Sophia at Constantinople. Throughout history graffiti were a form of communication to express opposition to social mores, heartbreak, popular beliefs, political propaganda and/or distaste for an enemy.

See: History of graffiti and Examples of graffiti

Break out the spray paint folks. Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to create your own original graffiti using the "walls" below or you can create your own "wall." Entries can be funny, political, historical, religious, whatever. They can be artsy or stick figures, words or symbols ~ something akin to ancient graffiti seen on walls in ancient Rome, Pompeii, wherever, and/or something related to AW and GoldFest. The judges will be looking for originality and imagination.

The challenge is open to all members of Ancient Worlds. You can start posting your entries Monday, 10/01. Judging will begin Wednesday, 10/17 and winners will be announced Saturday, 10/20.

Be sure to sign up "HERE" to be eligible for a money prize and nifty plaque.

    NOTE:
We are accepting entries in English as well as ancient languages. However, if you are using an ancient language in your graffito, be sure to provide a translation for the judges. There are eight categories and we need to know the sentiment and/or tone of your graffiti in order to judge it properly. The translation can be added as a post script text beneath your "graffito wall" entry.
