In Turkey, there are different types of music.

In 1700 BC Turks started to migrate from their homeland, Central Asia, to Asia, North Africa and Eastern Europe. One large tribal branch entered Anatolia in the 11th century AD and their Central Asian culture blended with that of Anatolia and gave rise to a new colourful cultural style. Finds of musical instruments in Anatolia go back five thousand years B.C. Prior to the proclamation of the Republic, the study of western music started with the establishment of the palace band.

In Turkey, there are different types of music:

    1. Traditional Art Music usually bearing similar characteristics to Folk Music, but influenced by the music of neighbouring countries.
    2. Turkish Folk Music (Mostly favoured in rural areas)
    3. International Art Music often called "Universal", "European", "Contemporary", "Western" or "Classical" music.
    4. Pop Music influenced by Western traditional and folk music has many different forms.

Music has gained a respected place in Turkish society in recent years. The Turkish media give wide coverage to music and musical events around the world. Radio and TV channels broadcast all kinds of music. Big firms produce casettes, records and CDs of famous Turkish Composers.
