Social commentary is a thoughtful, and sometimes opinionated, response to "contemporary" events. Oftentimes is is structured around an argument or sorts and weighs the pros and cons of both sides. Other times it simply expresses an argument in favour of an opinion one way or another. And finally, sometimes a cosial comentary simply comments on a particular state of affairs in the current context.
Generally, contemporary events are newsworthy items of the moment, one that comes to mind fight off the bat is the controversy over fast food and obesity that seems to be manifesting itself in lawsuits against fast food companies. another good one is rights vs. responsibility.
So how do we make "contemporary events" historical? The answer lies in the term congtemporary itself. Contemporary can refer to whichever period of time or context of occurance is being discussed. In effect, we think in terms of the context of the day. For example, what responsibilities would accompany the rights of an Athenian philosopher in Classical Greece?
If you want to write an op/ed (opinion/editorial) article on the role pf philosphers in ancient Greek culture the social commentary genre might be a good structure in which to demonstrate your argument..
