Discussion of the Jacobite Rising and eventual defeat at Culloden.
King James lost the throne in 1688. He was eventually replaced by King George I, the Elector of Hanover, in 1714. The Jacobites hoped the "German Geordie" would be so unpopular that the people would prefer to be ruled by King James' son, James VIII.
They began a Rising, but poor leadership and organisation led to a "draw" at Sheriffmuir and the campaign disintegrating. Even James himself was late for the Rising!
Their last effort was led by James VIII's son, Charles Edward Stuart, "the Young Pretender," in 1745. His army defeated the Hanoverians at Prestonpans and secured Edinburgh and advanced on London, but turned back at Derby and won another victory at Falkirk before their tragic defeat at Culloden.
