For discussion of the Stuarts, the Union of the Crowns and the Act of Union.

When Queen Elizabeth I of England died in 1603, King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. He introduced his vision of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, but his subjects resisted the notion and Scotland and England each kept their own parliament, government, laws and church.

King James compared himself to a beast with one head and two bodies. It was difficult for the monarchs who stayed in London after the Union of the Crowns to control Scotland. The problem was eventually addressed with the Act of Union in 1707.
