The province of Asia (or Asia Minor) roughly covered Anatolia and originally comprised a number of independent kingdoms, some of which had direct contact with the Roman Republic, and relations were not always good. These kingdoms gradually fell under Roman rulership and in 129 BC the Roman republic claimed Anatolia as its own, establishing the province of Asia, with its capital at Ephesus. The Roman Province of Asia also included the regions of Mysia, Lydia, Caria, and Phrygia.
