Why do the Scots jump over bonfires? Why must a circle be walked sunwise? Why does the First Footer come bearing gifts of salt and coal? Why are charm stones handed down through families? Why do the sidhe give certain pipers magic chanters? Why throw coins in rivers? Though the origin and meaning of ancient Scottish customs, beliefs and sayings are lost, or difficult to trace, they are remnants of ancient rites, and many are still practiced today.
