A discussion of the dolmens and menhirs of Scotland, including speculation on their origins and purposes.
The Neolithic peoples of Scotland began farming the land and built the megaliths some time between 3000 and 2000 B.C.
Megaliths are classed in two categories: "dolmens" and "menhirs." Dolmens, also called "chamber tombs," usually contain one or more chambers or rooms in which the dead were buried. The tombs buried under mounds are called "tumuli" (plural for "tumulus"). Menhirs are large standing stones, or groups of standing stones, arranged in circles, or cromlechs, and henges.
The megaliths are all that remain of a broader landscape of ritual sites built of timber and stone. The Neolithic farmers who created them seem to have had a shared interest in astronomy. Whatever their origins and purposes, they have fascinated scholars and lay persons for centuries.
