Many an adventure in search of lost antiquities begins here in the sitting room of the Antiquarian Society.

Large bookcases run along the mahogany panelled walls, filled with books of all sizes and thicknesses. Most wear the patina of reverent use, evidence of the handling by thousands of hands. The large bay windows are veiled by silken panels of ruby red and framed by forest green drapery, tied back with golden ropes. Large, over-stuffed and comfortable chairs are scattered throughout, some in pairs, others in groups of three or four. Each chair, or pair of chairs, is accompanied by a small table. Larger tables are also present. Books, maps and notes are spread out on a few of them, as men and women engage in discoveries known only to themselves and their colleagues. Everyone in the room displays a small pin -- a black triangle with the letters AS etched in gold -- trimmed with a gold border, discreetly worn. This pin is the key to this salon. The Antiquarian Society is an exclusive club, invitation only!
