    Julian is one of the more famous late Roman Emperors because he tried to reinstate the traditional Roman deities over Christianity as the prominent faith in the Empire. Obviously he failed but how close did he come to succeeding and why did his cause fail following his death?

    Scholars agree that only a minimal number of imperial citizens were Christian when Constantine made it the official imperial religion. After a century of doctrinal disputes and increasing power, paganism was in utter retreat. For discussion of the many flashes of Pagan reaction in the period.
