 I have a question, and I can't find the answer anywhere!

I'm Confused!!
I've been hearing about a thing called S.P.Q.R. for a while now, and I haven't the slightest idea what it is. I know it's a computer game, but I don't want that answer. I know it had something to do with Ancient Rome, but I don't know what. And was the movie Gladiator, the one with Russel Crowe, actually historically accurate by showing the slaves with SPQR tattooed on their arms? What did it mean?
If anyone could tell me, I'd be eternally grateful!
