Caracalla was assassinated, and the Mauretanian usurper Macrinus was able to hold the purple for about a year, but the pressures of the office conspired against him and eventually the army led by Elagabalus, son of a niece of Caracalla, ended his reign. In many ways as excessive as Caligula, he too was soon assassinated. 218 - 222 AD
