The weaponry of the Vikings gained a mystique of its own in this warrior society, something which can now be uncovered by archaeology and examination of Old Norse literature.

In a warrior society weapons were prized, and particularly fine, well decorated and famous weapons were prized most of all. Some were immortalised in poetry and song, others were buried with their masters. Many were given names and some were said to have magical powers. As the tools of an elite warrior class or essential protection in an often violent world, weapons were a daily part of Viking life.
