The Mon are the earliest known inhabitants of lower Burma. Their first kingdom Suwarnabhumi, was founded around the port of Thahtun in about 300 BCE. Spoken tradition suggests that they had contact with Buddhism via seafaring as early as the third century BCE, though definitely by the second when they received an envoy of monks from Ashoka. Much of the Mon's written records have been destroyed through wars.
