The descendants of Vikings who settled in northern France, the Normans were to take the spirit of their Scandinavian ancestors far and wide.
When the Frankish king Charles III granted some land to the Viking chieftain Hrolf, he could not have known the impact this was to have. Two hundred years later, these "Normans" were to rule England, Sicily and southern Italy and have carved out Crusader kingdoms in the Middle East.
The Normans were always proud of their Viking heritage and were amongst the most influential peoples of the early Medieval period.
