 The Road to Miklagard: The Vikings in the East

The Swedish Vikings or "Rus" sailed, raided and traded on the great rivers of eastern Europe and founded a nation named after them - Russia. From there they sailed to serve in Constantinople - which they called "Miklagard", the Great City.
Vikings from Sweden found their way into eastern Europe via it's great river highways and soon established themselves in the country that was to bear their name - Russia.
From there many Vikings travelled to the capital of the Byzantine Empire - Constantinople - to serve as mercenaries or to join the famed Varangian Guard. This unit of axe-weilding blond Northmen became famous throughout the Mediterranean and some Viking families in distant Scandinavia were brought back gold and stories from the magnificent city of "Miklagard".
