Germanic Tribes and their Names
Public thread for discussion of Germanic Tribes and their names and origins.
Most of the names of the Germanic tribes which come down to us are Latinised versions of the names these peoples gave themselves or, in somes cases, of nicknames they were given by their neighbours or enemies. In some cases the original Germanic forms of their names can be reconstructed and these can tell us something of the nature of these tribes and how they saw themselves.
