The term "cult" carries two related but very different meanings. It is the formal means of expressing religious reverence, that is, religious ceremony and ritual. In this sense, one might speak of the Cult of the Virgin, or the Cult of Sol Invictus. The word "cult" is also used to denote a eligion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader. This topic is dedicated to exploring the cult aspects of ancient religions.
