The Valley Temple (- threads, 56 posts)

Valley Temples were buildings erected for the Cult of the deceased Kings. They were set a little ways off from the pyramid and intended as a vestibule of sorts, with a t-shaped entrance and connected with the pyramid by a long causeway. The were in use in the Old Kingdom, and in some places there are signs that actual embalming were performed here. They also held various chambers and halls for statues of the king and for the placing of offerings.

    From the early times, when the deceased were laid to rest in a shallow pit of sand, the funerary customs developed and changed to become elaborate and sophisticated to a degree that it will probably never lose its fascination for modern people.

    It is a vast topic which can be talked about at length. Here is just a mere beginning:
