Thank you for your visit to the Porticus Meleagri. Comments and information on the hero Meleager or the Calydonian Boar hunt are welcome here. Historical Note 1 – The famous sculpture of Meleager by Skopas that decorated the Porticus in ancient times is lost. Roman copies of the original are found in several museums. The image shown to the left is a Roman copy now in the Vatican museum. Historical Note 2 – According to Pausanius, the tusks of the Calydonian Boar were removed from the Sanctuary of Athena Alea at Tegea by Augustus in 31 BC after the Battle of Actium. The tusks were taken to Rome and displayed with other curiosities in a sanctuary of Dionysus in Augustus’ gardens (Pausanias, Description of Greece, 8.46).
