Regarding your post Nimue, I to live in the Sunshine state and just like yourself have great difficulties with some of my favourite plants and herbs. I just can't get accustom to the soil here so it is persistance, trail & error to have the beautiful plants that are found in the northern region. Fortunately I've got a fair amount of shade in my front and back gardens otherwise non-native plants are quite often planted in pots.
