"A fire is needed, for the one who came in
and whose knees have gotten cold.
Food and clothing needs the man
who came across the fjeld.
Water needs the traveller who came to the meal,
and towel and friendly welcome.
A benevolent mind, if such a thing he can win,
chatting and invitation in return."
- I see this as an indication of the warm welcome and hospitality shown to strangers. "A benevolent mind" - if we keep an attitude of welcome and acceptance to all, the congeniality warms us as much as the fire. "If such a thing he can win" - it's sometimes difficult to be open to new people and new experiences, but well worth the effort for what it brings to us. Don't know - that's my interpretation anyway.
