To everyone's amazement, the Welsh Rugby team (which had lost to Italy a week ago - which is a bit like Scotland losing to the Faroe Islands at football - something that did once happen) comprehensively beat England today.
I am trying to be happy for them ... Cardiff - where the game was played - and the whole of Wales will certainly be *very* happy.
Do any of you know the 'Armes Prydein' (Prophecy of Britain)? - a wonderful Welsh text, probably of the tenth century, which looks forward to the day the English will be defeated, with so many dead on the battlefield that the corpses won't even be able to lie down, but will be left there standing, after which the few survivers will be forced to take ship and 'go home'.
It is a great poem - though, on the down side, also a sad reminder of how long historical memories and bitterness can last.
