This morning, Janankhesen goes about her chores with lightness in her steps. Her sisters look strangely at her. She whistles while she works! As she goes to fetch the water jugs, Janankhesen pays no attention to her sisters' teasing. She has a plan, a plan unknown to them all.

Soon, she will run away with that certain someone, yes run away, to a place called Karnak. For as long as she can remember, she has dreamed of seeing the Oracle. She has pictured the streets lined with people from far and wide, as they journey witness the drama, the spectacle of Opet. Janankhesen was never permitted to go. All she knows of Karnak comes from the tales her brothers tell of their journeys. Janankhesen has always wanted to travel, too, travel anywhere, but as often as she has asked, just as often, she has been denied.

This day is special. She turns fifteen. Soon, she is to be joined to a much older man, a man her father insists she marry. Janankhesen has her own ideas though, some of them, dangerous. She will do anything to get out of this marriage.

Now the stalls have been cleaned; the goats have been fed and milked. Soon, the sun will rise. It is time to go to the well! There, she will meet him, the boy she loves, for a stolen kiss or two, and to talk more of her escape plans.
