I recommend this for anyone wishing to visit Scotland. Mr. David R. Ross writes about his own travels through his beloved country and points out little known historic gems as well as popular tourist attractions.
He gives the history of the items and provides detailed instructions on how to get to them.
The only problem I had with the book was in thinking "I've driven by that. Twice! Now I'll just have to go back again." Therefore; I thank Mr. Ross for making me want to visit it all again.
I noticed someone wrote about London: The Biography. I too enjoyed that book. The best part of it, is that Mr. Ackroyd did not split the book up by timelines, but rather by categories. By that I mean, food; flora & fawna; burial grounds etc. A little hard on the wrist though (it's a pretty large book).
