The Danish Princess Dagmar married the later Czar Alexander III of Russia, taking the name of Maria Fedorovna in 1866. Maria Fedorovna was the mother the later Czar Nicholay II who ruled from 1894 until he abdicated the throne in 1917. She survived the revolution and left Russia on a British naval vessel in 1919. She lived in Hvidovre, Denmark, until she died in 1928. Maria Fedorovna was buried in Roskilde Cathedral in Roskilde, Denmark, but she was reburied in Saints Paul and Peter Cathedral in St. Petersburg on the 28. september 2006.
