An interesting article. I've wanted to get up to Kalkriese for years now. As the article notes, there a lot of contenders for the site, scattered throughout the Teutoberger and the Weserbergland. Most of them are wishful thinking, at best.

While I agree that the Kalkriese site looks good, and is the best candidate by far, the evidence is still not 100% conclusive. There are a couple of people who think they have another site (the name of which escapes me at the moment) closer to the Weser and farther south. They agree that Kalkriese is connected to the Varus campaign, but they don't think it is the site of the final slaughter.

With any luck, time will tell. A lot of Roman material has been turning up in Germany east of the Rhine lately. Just 2 years ago, a marching camp probably from Germanicus' campaign was found northeast of Kassel near Hannoversche Münden. Other finds have been turned up by expansion of the A7 Autobahn between Göttingen and Hanover and the construction of the new autobahn to the east.
