Notwithstanding animated GIFs, a different approach has been used to attach dynamic effects to web pages: java applets. Regrettably, java (the programming language for applets) entails programming skills. This means that you can't just start creating your own applets. So, a few programmers have produced free applets that permit customization. Thus as a substitute of learning the programming, the public can merely use the already programmed applets.
The lake applet is a good example of this. It makes a wave effect on any image of any size. But if you wanted to add anything else to the applet you would have to either program it yourself or locate a free applet that essentially did what you wanted. Flash movies behave like java applets. It has small programs that can be embedded into your HTML pages. But unlike java applets, it is quite easy to create animations in Flash with no programming skills.
Applets have often been condemned for "killing" browsers. Sometimes, java programmers are not as skillful as one might have hoped. Some applets are programmed so they ultimately take up all resources on the computer, and this results in "freezing" the browser.
So compared to java applets, the benefit of Flash is:
* Flash movies are more secure in web browsers than java applets.
* Flash movies are easier to create than java applets.
