Mr. Ross takes us on a journey through his beloved Scotland in a rather unusual way. He gets on his motorcycle (in some of his other novels, his car) and travels gives us the directions we need to arrive at our destination with less stress than we would have with just an ordinary map. (Which I will support from my own experiences in Scotland, are not generally accurate)
In this book he circles through his country beginning at the English border town of Carlisle and directs around the country with stops in Edinburgh, Skye and the northern region to Thurso before bringing us back down to end at Gretna Green.
With anecdotes and tips on how to arrive at hidden gems, he provides the history for each location. He also goes so far as to denote one-way configurations and if a museum charges a fee to enter.
His wonderful sense of humour keeps the reader wanting more, or allows those who have visited some of these locations to remember them with such vivid colour, one forgets they are no longer there.
Though this is not one of his "On The Trail Of (insert historical Scottish figure here)", he does point out spots of interest for those interested in William Wallace, Robert The Bruce and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
