The Temple of Artemis is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was built in the southwest of the hill in Selcuk known as Ayasuluk. About 200 years after the building of the temple it was destroyed by a man named Herostratos who wanted historic noteriety. The Ephesians did build a larger and more magnificent temple in its place but it destroyed by the invading Goths in 260AD. Rebuilt once more the temple lost its importance with the advent of Christianity and was eventually torn down by the new Christians who used its components for other structures
