an Arab, Ibrahim al-Tartushi, who first wrote of Hedeby, saying it was "known from Iceland to Baghdad." The time is a bit iffy, being variously reported as CE 804 or 808, take your pick. *S*
As for names, I've come up with Haddeby, Haithabu, Slesvig (our friend al-Tartushi's appellation), Sliesthorp, and Æt Hæthum.
