I send felicitations, dear father, on this, the anniversary of our first month in the Seraglio.
Life in the Sultan's residence has not proved to be what we expected. In this I am pleased, for the thought of being simply a vessel to be used at the Sultan's whim is repugnant to me.
Each day there is something new to be learned, for the women who administer the Seraglio are educated themselves, and realise that all of us who come here must be taught the ways of Turkey.
Yzebel, too, is being instructed, although, as you know, the life of a scholar is not to her taste. While there is rudimentary knowledge she must absorb, her talents run far more to the creative, and she excels in music and dance.
I, on the other hand, am fascinated by the many facets of Turkish law of which we knew nothing at home. Perhaps in my studies of such things, I may learn that which will be of use to you and Ema.
I pray you, be not more distressed at the loss of your daughters than you need to be. Both Yzebel and I are well situated within the oda of the former Sultan's favorite. She is a wise and capable woman, and in her charge we shall come to no harm here in the Seraglio.
My kisses and my love to both of you. I shall never forget from whence I sprang.
Your daughter,
Zdenka
