LOL! Hehe...do listen to Keira. :-) I am in definite agreement with her as always.
I guess there could also be another possible explanation which partly derives from what you wrote, Faramir. Do you think it was also possible that the churches wished to keep their high authority over the many people? With the thought of wishing to keep everything in balance as it was and the wish to keep their position?? Would you think it possible for the church to have along with their beliefs an ulterior motives?
Just rambling my way along...*eg*, but could it be possible that magic and such came to be so "famous" today because of how many looked down upon it as unright then during those periods? If it wasn't, would we still have this wide variety of books of fantasy and magic? Or is it possible that magic is a wide variety of things that has slowly been collected and classfied under one common thing after centuries of learning and understanding among people?
Any opinions from any one? Hmm...I mean, if you thought about it, it's such a vast topic that would need some looking into and also would make a nice debate, wouldn't it? ;) *sigh*
