The purpose of the two mnemonic devices was to illustrate two generalizations about Cyrillic characters compared to Latin characters. The word "KOMETA" incorporates the letters that look and sound more or less the same in both alphabets. The letters B C X P H Y that appear in the second phrase look the same, but sound different in the two alphabets. A third group of letters would be those that are more or less familiar because they look and sound like the Greek letters from which they were derived, for example Г, П, and ф, among others. I am no linguist, so I may have missed the mark completely with some of these remarks. I'm sorry if I caused confusion.
