The first son of Danu we encounter is the Dagda's tricky son, Midir. With him is a mean looking team of women.

"Watch he doesn't turn you into a swan!" Balbhuaidh shouts from behind me.

"If he does I'll steal his magic cranes," I shout back, looking over my shoulder in time to see my brother get hit on the head by the camán of one of our own teammates. By accident I hope!

I have no time to find out. Nor do I dare stop to help him. Midir is raising the sliotar high in the air and tossing it right at me. I catch it and run for four steps toward the Danann team's goal, then toss it in the air and give it a good whack with my camán.

It's an excellent strike! The sliotar whizzes past Midir toward the Danann goalkeeper's head. Then I notice a strange thing. His team of fierce sidhe women have been replaced by my own teammates, who stop the sliotar mid-flight.

I can't believe this is happening! Now I am completely on my own and must find a way to score a goal without help. Time to incorporate my martial arts skills into the game. I make a great salmon leap over their heads, striking the sliotar as I pass them by.

Screeching like a pack of beansidhes, my teammates run after me. Strange! They didn't sound like that before, but I have no time to think. They gain on me and I take a beating. Before they can bring me to the ground I make a Leap over a Blow and, holding the sliotar in my bas, barrel down the field. I'm so close to their goal, one final hurl should win me the day. I let the sliotar fly.

Suddenly a great wolfhound comes hurtling out of nowhere and catches the sliotar between its teeth.

"Nooooo!!!" I cry in unison with Ciaran and Ruad, who are chasing after the hound, but it doesn't listen. With glowing silvery eyes it dashes past the goalkeeper and drops the ball precisely on the spot I was aiming for. I quickly change my tune to "Good puppy!"

Meanwhile, the crowd is cheering wildly and Midir's women are wailing, "No fair!" They're standing right where my team was trying to block me only seconds before. Now my team is behind me yelling, "It is too fair, you pack of shapeshifting tricksters!"

Of course! Midir fooled me into thinking his team was mine, just like the time he turned fifty women into the likeness of Étain to hide her from Eochaid. It's a good thing our Mňraě tells us bedtime stories, or I wouldn't have a clue what my teammates were talking about.
