Here's an unusual item that may be of interest to some members (or possibly their sons). The American game publisher Avalanche Press, which is know for well-researched and beautifully-produced game products, is bringing out a new wargame this fall entitled Rome at War: Queen of the Celts. This is apparently the third game in a series that focus on tactical re-creations of multiple battles of a particular period of Roman history. (The first two games in the series -- Hannibal at Bay and Fading Legions -- respectively cover the final battles of the Second Punic War and the battles of the last century of the Western Roman Empire.)
The promotional material for this game indicates that it covers nine battles (all CE/AD) -- The Medway (Summer 43); The Thames (Summer 43); The Fall of Camulodunum (Fall 43) [modern Colchester]; the Rape of Maiden Castle (Spring 45); Hit and Run (Summer 47); Last Stand at Caersws (Summer 51); A Woman Scorned (Summer 60); Search and Destroy (Winter 73); Celtic Twlight (Summer 84). The on-line Avalanche Press promotional materials include an informative discussion of each. Game price upon publication: $40 US.
Could anything better indicate the surprising hold that Queen Boudicca of the Iceni continues to have on our historical imaginations?
