You and I both are aware that one never comes to Rome empty handed. We
have survived many years in our palaces on either side of The Adriatic
Sea. Princes who are naive do not survive as long as we.
Through my Roman agents, I have purchased a small, but elegant little
villa just outside of Rome on the opposite bank of The Tiber as is most
appropriate for one in my position. It is just next to where the great
Julius Caesar installed that foolish Egyptian Queen.
I shall use it for my stay here in Rome and have left a deed to the place
which turns it over to you as soon as I set foot in Macedon. I thought
the empress might find it amusing to get out of the glare of palace life
from time to time and hold parties and family weddings and such away from
public view.
At my age, I am a bit concerned about my health here in the hot summer
of Rome and what with the miasmas and all so close to the river, I have
taken the precaution of asking for the prayers of The Vestal Virgins. I
have deposited with them a will which leaves the villa to the Temple Of
Vesta should I not survive my stay here. It is a small thing and I now
feel certain that my visit shall end well and there is nothing to worry
about. You and I and the empress shall all benefit and all win.
