    This text hails from the theFirst Intermediate Period, but the main source, which is in St.Petersburg, is from the New Kingdom. It was in a very poor condition so it has been put together from several papyrii.

    It is a talk by a king whose name is lost to us, to his son Merikare. It is a treatise on kingship. The signs [ and ]is where a word is missing in the original and has been put in by egyptologists. Here are some more lines for your reading pleasure!

    Copy your forefathers, for [work] is carried out through knowledge; see, their words endure in writing. Open, that you may read and copy knowledge; (even) the expert will become one who is instructed. Do not be evil, for patience is good; make your lasting monuments in the love of you. Multiply [the people] whom the city has enfolded; then will God be praised because of rewards; 'men will' watch over your [...] and give thanks for your goodness, and your health will be prayed for[...]
