May another Roman pay his respects? In my own time, all soldiers knew that the hope of catching up with - let alone surpassing - Alexander's achievements was the greatest ambition, only hoped for by the greatest Romans. And I must say - none did.
It was as if we loved and hated Alexander. Loved his glory - and envied it, because he could not be matched, and he a mere Greek - a culture we always felt superior to. He was always so far out ahead, that no man could see more than his heels as he left us behind.
I bow my head.
