As Hawkins neared the gypsy's wagon, he saw a shadowy figure move away from the wagon. The figure paused a brief moment, then disappeared into the growing darkness. Hawkins cautiously approached the place where the figure had been. A flicker of moonlight cast a momentary gleam on the ground, revealing a still form lying there. Hawkins felt there was a familiarity to the form; a familiarity that was confirmed when he knelt by it.
It was Andre, the man he was supposed to meet. A dagger protruded from his chest where it impaled his heart. Hawkins sighed, then he, too, stood and looked about him. No one seemed to be near. The sound of a carousel could be heard a short distance away. Hoping to find his Watchers, Hawkins made his way towards the sound.
Standing on the edge of a small group of people, he saw two young women looking about themselves as though they were lost. They were joined by a unctuous gentleman and his dark-skinned servant. Hawkins recognized the man as Professor Hellbore, the purported owner of this carnival. Hawkins knew him as something more. He watched as the professor's servant easily picked up one of the young ladies, holding her still form close to his massive chest.
Though he did not know the women personally, the dark-haired lady he recognized as the Lady Dalbeath from the newspaper accounts of a scandal involving the lady and a lord. He also was aware that the newspapers were incorrect in a number of their insinuations and accusations. His Order had a rather extensive knowledge of the history of the Dalbeath's, as well as the Drakeheath's.
With great care, Hawkins elected to follow Hellbore as he led Lady Dalbeath to a wagon that was a slight distance from the rest of the troupe. Hawkins did not know what Hellbore had in mind, but he felt that the Lady and the other young woman were in grave peril. As the party entered the isolated wagon, Hawkins moved closer, hoping to overhear those inside.
