For those interested in taking a place at court, here's some extremely brief information on some court positions.
Some of the most powerful positions included those of Palatine, Supreme Judge, Royal Treasurer, the heads of Provinces including the fejedelem (governor) of Transylvania and the ban (viceroy) of Croatia - but interestingly enough, there was a class of noblemen that arose from the royal servants called servientes regis.
For those that aren't familiar, the Palatine was the representative of the king - originally this position was appointed by the king, but later it was elected by the Diet of Hungary. From around 1200, the Palatine was also the comes (basically county leader) of several counties and was entitled to one third of the county taxes. The Palatine's deputy (vicepalatinus) was based in Pest where he was the county leader of Pest county and judge of the middle nobility.
For those aspiring to royalty - the title herceg was equivalent to duke, but at this point in time all the dukes were from within the royal family. Any princesses by birth were called hercegn and those women that married into the royal family and were wives of dukes were called hercegne.
For the most part the information I've posted so far has dealt mainly with the nobility and the court, however, not all of it excludes the lower classes. When it comes to struggles for power between the nobility, they would usually stoop to whatever means necessary to do away with rivals or at least get them out of the picture until they make their move. This provides many opportunities for trips to Obuda. *g* As for details of the common people, I'm going to leave that fairly open. I don't know about anyone else, but with historical roleplays I can tend to spend more time researching rather than posting when the roleplay tries to stick to straight historical facts - that is one reason why we are keeping a lot of this open. LOL I'm trying to locate a good map of the Kingdom of Hungary for our timeframe so everyone can see what exactly the Kingdom of Hungary encompassed and who was beholden to them. As soon as I have that, I'll get it scanned and posted. *g*
