This is going to be one post in a couple/few that I'm going to make regarding the background information for our roleplay. If anyone has any questions on any of this, just holler! *g*

For the purposes of our roleplay, we're squeezing our Kiraly Ambrus in between the reigns of Laszlo V (the Posthumous) and that of Matyas Corvinus. Historically, Matyas did come directly after Laszlo, but as there were some contenders, etc. for the throne, I thought this would be a perfect time for our roleplay. The information below is the historical information of the two kings prior to ours and of Matyas Corvinus - again, Matyas isn't king yet, but he would definitely be a prominent figure at and around the court.

    Laszlo V (the Posthumous)
    [b. 22 February 1440 / d. 23 November 1457]
    King of Hungary: 1440, 1444-1457
    King of Bohemia: 1453-1457
    Habsburg House
Laszlo V was the son of Albert II of Habsburg (Holy Roman Emperor) and Elizabeth, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, Sigismund. As he was born after his father's death, he was also called Laszlo the Posthumous. While an infant, the estates of Hungary elected Ulaszlo I as their king, however, Laszlo's mother arranged for the crown to be stolen and had Laszlo crowned King of Hungary at Szekesfehervar on May 15, 1440. For the safety of her son, Elizabeth placed Laszlo under the protection of Frederick III. Upon the death of Ulaszlo I in 1444, the Hungarian estates elected Laszlo the Posthumous as their king, despite great opposition. In 1457 and under the pretence of accusing Laszlo Hunyadi (eldest son of Janos Hunyadi and older brother of Matyas Corvinus) of an attempted assassination, King Laszlo had Hunyadi decapitated. This event caused such an uproar in Hungary that King Laszlo had to flee for his life and fled to Prague, where he spent the remaining months of his life, dying on November 23, 1457. At the time it was rumored that he was poisoned by political rivals in Bohemia, but there was never any actual proof to support it. It was later proven, in the 20th century, that he died of leukemia, but the poisoning rumor could very well work to our advantage in the roleplay.

    Ulaszlo I of Varna
    [b. 31 October 1421 / d. 10 November 1444]
    King of Hungary: 1440-1444
    King of Poland: 1434-1444
    Jagiellon House
Ulaszlo I was the son of Wladislaus II Jagiellon of Poland and was crowned King of Poland in 1434 at the age of 10. In 1440 he was offered the crown of Hungary by the Hungarian Diet and despite opposition and a two year civil war with Elizabeth, widow of the previous King of Hungary (Albert of Habsburg), he took the throne with significant support from Pope Eugenius IV. He was killed on November 10, 1444 during the Battle of Varna, during the charge on the ranks of the Ottoman janissaries.

    Matyas Corvinus
    [b. 23 February 1443(?) / d. 6 April 1490]
    King of Hungary: 1458-1490
    King of Bohemia: 1469-1490
    House of Hunyadi
Second son of Janos Hunyadi (1407-56; Governor of Hungary 1446-52) and younger brother of Laszlo Hunyadi. He was historically elected as the King of Hungary on January 20, 1458 while a hostage of the Hussite King of Bohemia, George of Podebrady. His release was contingent upon is marriage to Catharine, the daughter of George. At the time, Frederick III was also claiming the throne of Hungary and initially fought against Matyas, but officially accepted him as the rightful king in 1463.
