About 20 years ago, I taught a microlesson about the Cyrillic alphabet as part of a methods class that I was taking for my science supervision certification. The lesson being modeled was an inductive teaching method, and I chose the Cyrillic alphabet because I wanted a fair assessment of how effective the model could be. The idea behind the choice of topic was the likelihood that few of my classmates would have prior knowledge of the subject. The basic objective was to see if the target audience could formulate generalizations about which letters in the Cyrillic and Roman alphabets are alike and different in appearance and sound. The model worked like a charm, and the fact that I remembered КОМЕТА as a key word for the letters which look and sound alike proves that the lesson was long lasting. I was reminded of this when I joined the Russia group here at AW. If I remember correctly, the mnemonic for remembering which letters look alike but sound different is В С(А)X(А)Р(И)НУ. I'm not sure about the exact meaning, but it has something to do with saccharin. I'm thinking about enrolling in a Russian language class in the fall, so joining the group might be helpful.
