Titus V, imperator of Rome, was not having a good day. He had been thrilled by his presents--particularly that given him by consul Salvia Vorra (a card promising a real present later that evening)--but that was the morning. This afternoon, it was back to business, and his secretary Milo was not likely to let him forget! Still, he took some moments at his desk recalling the events of his birthday so far: the ride in his carruca had been exciting, though he would still prefer the imperial carriage--it might be slower, but had ample space for sleeping and even a small library for long trips!

His major present from Salvia Vorra, was still unknown...there had been no package, so he wondered what it could be. He knew what it should be, and he hoped he was right. The very idea sent tingles down his spine! What that woman could do with a few grapes and cream was amazing!

A knock at the door interrupted his reverie, and he picked up his stylus and coughed. "Enter!"

It was, of course, Milo--imperial secretary and pest. The man was about sixty, slim and oily as most greeks seemed to be who held authority. "Excellency, a certain matter has come up, and I thought you'd want to know."

"What is it, Milo--it's my birthday, can't I have some peace?"

Milo grunted, he knew his master's moods, and that this was mostly a front--the divine Titus loved work and had told his secretaries to keep him informed of any new items of business. "Lord, the ministry of Legions reports some missing items from their scholae physica in Vetera, Germania...a matter of some two dozen of the new greek pila."

Titus nodded. "I'll take care of it..." and he took the report from his secretary and sent him out again.

Damn the man! He had been told to be careful, and not to take anything noticeable! Greek Pila, for gods' sakes! They were still experimental, and not to be used outside of test ranges until perfected! Black powder was to be Rome's biggest advantage in battle, not to be used until it was fully tested...and here the man had stolen a good quarter of the supply for the colonia....Titus clamped down that thought before he lost his temper, and gave serious consideration to what action he would take.

He was not ready to have his hand revealed too soon!
