Meroe was a thousand year old African culture that lasted from 600 BCE until 400 AD.
Meroe's core location was between Upper Egypt and southern Sudan. It was a country mentioned
by Herodotus, although he never visited it.
Meroe is noted for mounds and temples which were built from brick and stone. Many small pyramids dot the
landscape of Meroe. According to at least one source, 72 generations of rulers held sway over the Merovian
culture. The pyramids of Meroe are smaller than those associated with Egpyptian, and tend to be more steeply-pointed.
Merovian writings resemble Egyptian hieroglyphs, but little, if any, have been translated.
