The 1st Phase of Russian Literature was from the 11th century to the early 13th century and is known as the Kievan Period or the Pre-Mongol Period.
Writings were concentrated in Kiev and were written in the language of the East Slavs.
The most famous piece of literature from the period is Slovo o plku Igoreve or The Song of Igor's Campaign. The work was translated in 1960 by Vladimir Nabokov.
The Song is an account on the unsuccessful campaign in 1185 by Prince Igor of Novgorod-Seversky and other allied princes and their armies against the Polovtsians [a Turkic people of nomadic heritage from the eastern steppe].
